ChatGPT email marketing usually stops at writing: you ask for a newsletter, copy it, and paste it into another tool to send. With a sending app connected, ChatGPT can do the rest: save the campaign as a draft for your contact list, send you a test, send it now or schedule it, and afterwards tell you how many people opened, clicked, unsubscribed, bounced or complained.

This page explains how that works with OwnMailServer, what ChatGPT can and can't do, and where things stand with our ChatGPT app.

Where our ChatGPT app stands

We submitted the OwnMailServer app to OpenAI, and as of October 29, 2026 it's in review. When it's approved, you'll add it from ChatGPT's app directory and sign in with your OwnMailServer account.

Until then, the same connector, with the same tools, works in two other AI apps:

Everything below works the same way in all three.

What you can ask ChatGPT to do

You say What happens
"Draft our Black Friday email to the Customers list" Saves a draft and sends nothing.
"Change the subject line" / "Use the VIP list instead" Edits the draft.
"Send me a test" Sends up to 5 test copies marked "[Test]", which don't count in the results.
"Send it Tuesday at 9am" Schedules it, up to 30 days ahead. Asks your time zone if it doesn't know it.
"Actually, hold off" A scheduled email goes back to being a draft.
"How did the campaign do?" Delivered, opens, clicks, unsubscribes, bounces and complaints, with rates.
"Fix Kat's name, it's Cat" / "Add Dov back, he asked" Edits contacts. Won't resubscribe anyone who bounced or marked the email as spam.
"Turn on click tracking for acme.com" Switches open and click tracking per domain.
"Send bounce events to my app" Adds, lists and removes webhooks.

ChatGPT can also set up a new account from the chat: add your sending domain, give you the DNS records to publish, check them, and tell you what's left before you can send.

A campaign, start to finish

1. Build your list

Create a list called Newsletter and add these subscribers.

Paste names and addresses, or a CSV export. Up to 500 contacts are added per step and a list holds up to 100,000. Invalid addresses are skipped and reported. Adding someone doesn't email them. Only add people who agreed to hear from you.

2. Draft it

Draft our November newsletter to the Newsletter list: two new products, the holiday shipping deadline, and a 10% code for subscribers. Start with "Hi {{first_name|there}}".

ChatGPT writes it, saves a draft and shows it to you. Ask for changes until it reads right. Each person's name is filled in when it sends.

3. Test it

Send me a test.

You get a real copy in your inbox with "[Test]" in the subject. Check it on your phone. Test copies don't count in the results.

4. Send or schedule

Send it Thursday at 8am.

Each subscriber gets their own copy with a one-click unsubscribe link. Anyone who unsubscribed, bounced or complained before is skipped. Copies go out as fast as your daily limit allows; on a new account in IP warm-up, a large list takes a few days and carries on by itself.

5. Ask how it did

How did the November newsletter do? Compare it with October's.

Clicks, unsubscribes, bounces and complaints are the numbers to act on; opens are approximate because Apple Mail and security scanners load images by themselves. Our guide to email campaign reporting with AI goes through each number.

What ChatGPT can't do

Campaigns aren't locked to the chat. A draft ChatGPT saves shows up on the dashboard's Broadcasts page with a rendered preview, where you can edit it, send a test, schedule it in your time zone or send it now. You can also start one there.

These stay in the dashboard so a chat can't change them by accident:

  • API keys and webhook signing secrets.
  • Removing a sending domain.
  • Billing.
  • Lifting a bounce or spam-complaint block on an address.

When you connect, the Allow screen has two boxes: Send email and Manage sending domains and settings (which also covers tracking and webhooks). Untick both and ChatGPT can only read your numbers.

ChatGPT vs a traditional email marketing tool

A tool like Mailchimp gives you a drag-and-drop editor, signup forms, templates and automations. That's the right choice if you want to design emails visually or build automated sequences.

Sending from ChatGPT suits a different way of working:

  • You'd rather describe the email than build it. ChatGPT writes it, and you edit by asking.
  • You send regular campaigns to a list you already have. Newsletters, launches, sales, updates.
  • You want answers, not dashboards. "Which campaign got the most clicks this quarter?" is one question.
  • You pay per email, not per contact. $0.20 per 1,000 emails, with a $10 monthly minimum covering the first 50,000. Contact-based tools charge for the size of your list whether you mail it or not.

We don't offer signup forms, a visual editor or automated sequences. If you need those, a marketing platform is the better fit. Our Mailchimp alternative page compares the two honestly, with prices.

Where it saves time

The writing was never the slow part of a campaign. What takes the afternoon is everything around it, and that's what a connected ChatGPT handles:

  • List upkeep. "Add the 40 people who bought this week" or "fix Kat's name, it's Cat" is a sentence instead of an import screen.
  • Corrections. "Shorter subject, and move the discount code up" edits the draft in place. No template editor.
  • Testing. "Send me a test" puts a real copy in your inbox in seconds.
  • Scheduling. "Thursday at 8am" in your own time zone, with no scheduler to find.
  • Reporting. "How did it do compared with last month?" replaces an export and a spreadsheet.
  • Follow-up. "Which addresses bounced? Take the dead ones off the list" is one exchange.

Prompts that work well

Be specific about the list, the goal and the tone, and ask for a test before anything goes out:

Draft a short email to the VIP list announcing early access to the winter sale, starting tomorrow at 9am. Friendly, no more than 120 words, one button to /sale. Then send me a test.

Look at our last three campaigns and tell me which subject line got the best click rate, and why you think it worked.

Schedule the draft for Tuesday 9am my time. If anything on the list bounced last month, tell me first.

ChatGPT asks when something is missing, like which list to use or your time zone, instead of guessing.

Keep it out of spam

Every email goes from your own domain, signed with DKIM and covered by SPF and DMARC, through IPs we warm up and watch around the clock. Bounces and complaints are suppressed automatically, and we pause sending if complaints pass 0.3% in a day to protect your domain. What you control: mail only people who opted in, and keep your list fresh. Ask ChatGPT to "check my domain health" any time.

Get started

Sign up for early access; we review every account, usually within one business day, and nothing is charged before approval. Pricing is on the pricing page. While our ChatGPT app is in review, connect OwnMailServer in Claude or Muse and try: "Draft a broadcast to my Test list, send me a test, then schedule it for tomorrow at 9am."
