OwnMailServer is a Mailchimp alternative for businesses that mostly send campaigns, such as newsletters, sales and product updates, to a list they already have. You pay for the emails you send, not for the size of your list, and you can run each campaign by asking Claude, ChatGPT or Meta Muse: draft it, test it, schedule it, then ask how it did. If you rely on Mailchimp's signup forms, drag-and-drop editor or automated sequences, keep Mailchimp; we don't have those.

Looking to replace Mailchimp's transactional add-on (Mandrill) instead? See our Mandrill alternative page.

What Mailchimp does well

Mailchimp is a complete marketing suite, and for many businesses that's the point:

  • A visual editor and templates. Design emails block by block without touching HTML.
  • Signup forms and landing pages. Grow the list from your website.
  • Automations. Welcome series, abandoned-cart emails, birthday emails.
  • Integrations. Hundreds of shop, CRM and form connections.
  • Segmentation and A/B testing on higher plans.

If those features are how you market, the price buys real value.

Mailchimp pricing as of October 2026

From third-party pricing trackers in October 2026; confirm on Mailchimp's pricing page, since prices change often.

Plan 500 contacts 5,000 contacts
Essentials from about $13/month about $75/month
Standard from about $20/month about $100/month
Premium starts at 10,000 contacts, from about $350/month n/a

Mailchimp's price is set by the number of contacts, with a monthly send allowance that's a multiple of your contact count. Your bill grows with your list, even for contacts you rarely mail.

How OwnMailServer prices campaigns

You pay per email sent:

  • $0.20 per 1,000 emails.
  • $10 monthly minimum, which already includes the first 50,000 emails.
  • $10 one-time setup fee.
  • No contact limits in the price, no plan tiers, no contract.

Each copy of a campaign is one email. Contacts you don't mail cost nothing. Full details are on our pricing page.

Cost comparison

Mailchimp figures are Essentials list prices from third-party trackers as of October 2026, before any discounts; confirm on Mailchimp's site. Ours are monthly, after the one-time $10 setup fee.

Your list How often you send Emails a month Mailchimp Essentials (approx.) OwnMailServer
500 contacts Weekly ~2,000 ~$13 $10
5,000 contacts Monthly 5,000 ~$75 $10
5,000 contacts Weekly ~20,000 ~$75 $10
25,000 contacts Weekly ~100,000 higher contact band; check Mailchimp $20

At small lists the difference is a few dollars. It grows with the list, because our price follows what you send rather than who's on the list.

Running campaigns from an AI app

This is the other big difference. Instead of a web editor, you run campaigns in plain English from Claude, ChatGPT or Meta Muse:

You say What happens
"Draft our Black Friday email to the Customers list" Saves a draft and sends nothing.
"Change the subject line" / "Use the VIP list instead" Edits the draft.
"Send me a test" Up to 5 copies marked "[Test]", kept out of the results.
"Send it Tuesday at 9am" Schedules it, up to 30 days ahead.
"Actually, hold off" Back to a draft.
"How did the campaign do?" Delivered, opens, clicks, unsubscribes, bounces and complaints, with rates.
"Fix Kat's name, it's Cat" Edits the contact.

Reports work the same way: "which campaign got the most clicks this quarter?" is one question, not an export. Step-by-step guides: send a campaign with Claude and ChatGPT email marketing. Developers can do all of it through the API, whose contact and broadcast endpoints follow Resend's.

Switching from Mailchimp

  1. Export your audience from Mailchimp as a CSV. Keep only subscribed contacts; drop anyone who unsubscribed, bounced or complained.
  2. Sign up and add your domain. The AI app can add it, give you the DNS records and check them. We review every account, usually within one business day.
  3. Import the list. Paste the CSV into Claude or ChatGPT and ask it to create a list, or use the API's batch endpoint.
  4. Start with your most engaged subscribers. A new account is in warm-up: its daily limit starts at a few hundred and rises after each clean day. A large campaign paces itself over a few days automatically.
  5. Keep Mailchimp running until the first few campaigns have gone out cleanly.

When to stay with Mailchimp

Stay if your marketing depends on signup forms, a visual editor, abandoned-cart or welcome automations, or deep segmentation. Switch if you mainly send regular campaigns to an existing list, want to pay for what you send, and would rather ask an AI than click through reports.
